Potty Training
Well you have a new pup in your home! Its an exciting time but now its time to get down to work to ensure your puppy turns into a Great Great Dane. In this section we are going to go over some tips on potty training. Potty Training doesnt have to be a horrible thing if you are patient and follow some of this important pointers.
1. The first step to successful potty training is purchasing a crate. (Refer to crate training section for more information about the correct crate to purchase). The key to potty training in regards to their crate, it needs to be the right size. Their should be just enough room for the pup to stand up and turn around. Anymore room than that it increases the chances of them to have an accident.
Pups do not like to use the bathroom in their area where they lay. This can be traced back as a survival techinque in dogs, as using the bathroom aware from their Den keeps predators away. Once pups are able to move the dam starts nudging them to use the bathroom away from their den. Before they are able to get away the dam actually licks and eats its puppies fecces.
The crate should be used for when the puppy isnt being supervised and at this age that means all the time! If you are busy cooking or cleaning put the pup in his crate! Going to work, running a quick errand, sleeping, put the pup in his crate. This will reduce the likelyhood of accidents occuring.
2. Routine Routine Routine. Dogs like people thrive on routine and some predictablity. Whatever routine maybe its important to get your pup on a routine for feeding, water, and bathrooming.
3. Use signals and commands when bringing them to the bathroom. When you are ready to take him outside give the command like "go poddy" bring the pup outside and give the same command when you are in the area you want him to use the bathroom. Reward him when does the correct behavior, treats, praise, and touch. Make it a postive experience!
4. Everytime the pup comes from his crate, eats, drinks, wakes up for a nap the pup should be brought were the desired location for potty immediately. I make it a rule when the pup is out with me they are brought to the bathroom every 30 minutes at least (if they had not had food, water or woke up from a nap during that time).
5. Be patient with your pup. They are more than likely have accident and in most incidences they are usually the humans fault. Follow the above guidelines and it should go fairly smooth. Do not yell, scream or hit your pup for having an accident, just bring them directly to their pody spot. Pody training dogs are like kids everyone gets at a different point but if you are consistent and patient things usually happen quicker.
A few other things, if you are getting an older pup where potty training has been worked on, remember the pup is coming into a new home, with a new potty location, a new routine so dont be suprised if they have an accident the same rules apply patience and consisestancy will be your keys for success. When your pup has an accident avoid using cleaners with ammonia as pups urine has ammonia in it and will not elimanate the smell and will increase the likelyhood they will use ths spot again. Some home remedies include, baking soda, salt and white vinegar to help remove the scent, bleach is better just be careful that you use color safe bleach when needed. Their are a ton of other cleaners you can purchase for this need at pet supply stores.
